Australian Institute of Junior DriversBased on a similar system in the UK, the Australian Institute of Junior Drivers is designed to be like a car club for 12 to 17 year olds who are enthusiastic about driving, motorsport and cars in general. The Institute in fact is committed to providing opportunities and training based upon motorsport principles and techniques. We firmly believe this will give focused competency skills and a venue and platform from which to grow their driving goals, ambitions and simply to have fun, in a controlled, safe environment. It should be stated at the outset that the Institute is not a ‘Learner’ driving school. In fact we thoroughly endorse and strongly encourage Juniors to undertake professional driving school lessons for learners, once they obtain their ‘L’s’. The aim of the Institute is to provide at least one activity per month for at least 10 months per year and will offer achievement based seniority and reward for effort of the members. These activities, will include mostly driving exercises, including buggies, go karts, off road vehicles, 4WD’s, race cars, hi performance street cars and different spec rally cars. We will also be running tours of race and rally workshops, race events, rallies and encouraging participation in CAMS (Confederation of Australian Motorsport) courses. We will have guest speakers and special appearances from time to time. It is also the constant aim to make each ‘event’ as affordable as possible, hopefully in the range of $100 to $150 per event. Costs will vary according to venue, numbers of participants on the day, number of staff required, vehicles and equipment. Therefore, we cannot offer fixed costs for all ‘events’ at the moment (although costs will be advised in advance of each event). There is also no obligation to attend all ‘events’. Parental involvement is fundamental to running the day and is an essential part of the Institute’s program. Initially parents need to provide the family car or other suitable vehicle for the member to start off with (Parents are in their cars with the member along with an Instructor). Once a member reaches 18, they can become an Associate Member and are encouraged to come back as part of the crew. A person may join at age 11 providing they turn 12 during that year.
